TAU Format Privacy Policy

TAU Format LLC (“TAU,” “we,” or “us”) provides document formatting and review tools for universities and their users. This policy covers our Microsoft Word add-in, LaTeX template and TAU package, website, licensing and support services, and business relationships. Our services are intended for higher education and are not directed to children under 13.

2. Information we collect and use

We and our providers receive connection and device information, such as IP addresses and browser information, to operate and secure our services.

Using the TAU Format add-in for Microsoft Word

The add-in formats and checks documents locally in Word without sending document content, files, file names or properties to TAU. We do not receive or store users’ names, email addresses or Microsoft account identifiers through ordinary add-in use. We use institutional and access information and limited technical reports, including usage statistics, to manage access and improve the add-in. Microsoft’s and your university’s document-storage services follow their own policies.

Using the LaTeX template and TAU package

Our LaTeX template and TAU package process documents within your LaTeX environment without connecting to TAU’s servers or sending us information. If you use them through a third-party platform, that platform’s own privacy policy applies.

Visiting the website and making inquiries

We keep information collection to a minimum and do not use visitor analytics tools. We receive contact details, institutional affiliation and inquiry information through website forms and correspondence, and use this information to respond and communicate about our services. Third-party providers supporting our website may process technical information and use cookies or similar technologies under their applicable privacy policies.

Purchasing and administering subscriptions

We receive subscription, contract, billing and payment information from universities and their representatives, including business contact details, to administer institutional subscriptions and relationships.

Requesting support

We receive your contact details, correspondence and any materials you voluntarily provide, including documents, to address your request.

3. Information sharing

We use providers for hosting, authentication, communications, security, support, billing and accounting. They may process information to provide these services, subject to applicable confidentiality and data-protection obligations.

Universities may receive aggregate usage information for their subscriptions. Where we process information on a university’s behalf, we follow its instructions and the applicable agreement.

We may disclose information to meet legal obligations, protect rights and security, or in connection with a business transfer, subject to applicable protections.

We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

4. Retention and security

We retain information as long as reasonably necessary to provide our services, administer customer relationships, address requests, and meet security, legal and accounting obligations. Retention depends on the type of information and its purpose.

We use reasonable administrative, technical and organizational safeguards. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure.

5. Your choices and rights
